Hempcrete Workshop
Sponsored by Right Coast Hemp

Hempcrete is a bio-composite building material used for non-bearing walls, insulating material, finishing plasters, and blocks. The material has low mechanical properties and low thermal conductivity, making it ideal for insulation material.
Hempcrete is a relatively new natural construction building material using hemp shives (the woody core of the hemp plant) with aggregate, water, and a type of binder (lime, sand, or pozzolans).
Hempcrete can be used in walls, floors, ceilings, roofs, and attics. Hempcrete blocks have a low carbon footprint and are carbon sinks.
Hempcrete’s strong points include thermal regulation, its ability to absorb and release moisture, and its ability to resist fire, mold, and pests. It is lightweight and non-toxic. Hempcrete is sustainable, carbon-neutral, and helps regulate indoor temperature.

In the United States, Hempcrete development as a building material is increasing. Much of the work is hands-on, resulting in viable structures. The same is true in the UK and Europe, including the Netherlands, France, and Ukraine, where the use of Hempcrete is growing in popularity.

Hempcrete has commercial potential. Hemp is a sustainable crop that grows in many parts of the world. Hempcrete is lightweight and non-toxic, making it easy to transport and store.
Hempcrete blocks absorb CO2 and function as a carbon sink. Hempcrete is an excellent replacement for other building materials used for thermal regulation, insulation, and sound mitigation; it can absorb and release moisture, and can resist fire, mold, and pests. It is lightweight and non-toxic.
Changes in the environment dictate the need for building materials that can help resist fire. The benefits include improved public safety, reduced insurance costs, and better management of municipal resources.
